Indian court rejects AB InBev's request to delay New Delhi sales ban

An Indian court turned down Anheuser-Busch InBev SA's request to hold off implementing a three-year sales ban in New Delhi amid ongoing legal proceedings with state authorities, Reuters reported Sept. 3.

In July, New Delhi officials stopped the Belgian brewing company from selling its beer products in the state over tax evasion allegations against its unit ABI SAB Group Holding Ltd., formerly known as SABMiller Ltd. The New Delhi excise commissioner had also rejected the company's request to temporarily suspend the sales ban.

AB InBev, the maker of Budweiser, Hoegaarden and Stella Artois beers, has denied the accusations and has filed an appeal against the ban order.

According to the latest report, Justice Navin Chawla of the Delhi High Court refused to give AB InBev immediate relief, saying the company must first complete the appeals process with state authorities.

However, Chawla reportedly said he believed the city government acted beyond its authority in banning the company. He will hear the case Sept. 16, the news wire said.

AB InBev did not immediately respond to S&P Global Market Intelligence's request for comment, but it said in a statement to Reuters: "It is our understanding that appropriate excise duty payments were made. We are committed to operating with integrity and high ethical standards."
