Uniqlo Japan's August sales up 8.8% YOY

Fast Retailing Co. Ltd. said Sept. 4 that same-store net sales of its Uniqlo apparel chain in Japan increased 8.8% year over year in August, driven by consistently hot weather that fueled strong sales across the brand's summer items.

Sales for Uniqlo Japan's directly run stores, excluding online sales, were up 7.4% year over year. Including online sales, total sales jumped 9.1%.

Customer numbers grew 3.7% on a same-store basis during the month, while average purchase per customer also increased 4.9% year over year.

The same-store total excludes a location that was nonoperational for more than a week after torrential rains in early July caused Uniqlo to temporarily close about 80 weather-afflicted stores.

The Japanese clothing retailer opened its first store in Sweden on Aug. 24 and closed four Uniqlo Japan stores during the month.
