Canada to invest C$2.2B to clean up 8 mines in Yukon, Northwest Territories

The Canadian government plans to invest C$2.2 billion over 15 years to clean up eight abandoned mining projects in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories, according to an Aug. 19 government release.

The projects include the Faro lead-zinc, United Keno Hill silver, Mount Nansen gold-silver, Ketza River gold-silver, and Clinton Creek asbestos mines in the Yukon; and the Giant gold, Cantung tungsten, and the Great Bear Lake mines in the Northwest Territories.

In a separate same-day release from the Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, the active remediation is expected to complete at seven of the eight mine sites at the end of the 15-year program.

Meanwhile, remediation of the other smaller mines or contaminated sites in the North will continue to be funded through Environment and Climate Change Canada's Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan.
