Report: Rome to ban diesel cars by 2024

Rome will ban diesel cars from the city center by 2024, Reuters reported Feb. 28, citing a posting on Mayor Virginia Raggi's Facebook page Feb. 27.

Nearly all the city's air pollution comes from road traffic rather than industrial activity, according to the report.

Rome currently bars older vehicles from its streets whenever pollution reaches critical levels, and also implements a scheme that keeps a portion of cars off the streets on alternating days, depending on whether license plate numbers end in an odd or even digit. However, these regulations are not strictly enforced or followed.

Raggi's decision comes after a German court ruled that cities across that country could ban the heaviest-polluting diesel vehicles, according to the report. It also follows an announcement in Milan that the Italian city will become diesel-free by 2030.
