Coal worker fatally injured at W.Va. underground mine

A shuttle car operator died June 5 from head injuries incurred at an underground coal mine in West Virginia.

Ronald Taylor, 43, was riding on a mantrip that struck a steel object in the roadway at the Morgan Camp mine, operated by Carter Roag Coal Co., according to a preliminary report from the state's Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training.

Taylor's death was the fifth U.S. coal mining fatality of 2018.

The Morgan Camp mine produced 50,734 tons of coal during the first quarter of 2018, data from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration showed.
