Austrian contactless payments surge in 2019

Austrians are using bank cards for their payments more often, with the number of such transactions rising by 12.3% in 2019, data released by PSA Payment Services Austria GmbH on Jan. 7 shows.

Nearly 900 million of the 1 billion payment transactions in Austria in 2019 were by bank card, said PSA, which manages ATM services for the Austrian banking industry. The average daily volume of bank card transactions via ATMs in Austria and abroad increased to 2.45 million in 2019, compared to 2.0 million in the previous year.

The total value of bank card transactions via ATMs in Austria and abroad for 2019 amounted to some €46.7 billion, accounting for the bulk of the total annual transaction value of €61.5 billion.

Contactless payments accounted for more than 73% of all bank card transactions at 2019-end, PSA said. In retail and e-commerce 515 million out of the total 762 million transactions were contactless.

The number of bank cards in use in 2019 remained stable year over year at 10 million.
