Amazon.com Inc.'s Japan arm will roll out Amazon Locker pickup kiosks in retail outlets and train stations across the country this year, the Nikkei Asian Review reported Sept. 12.
The move is expected to relieve some of the problems plaguing the parcel delivery industry in Japan and encourage more people to use locker terminals to pick up deliveries, the news outlet said. A 2017 survey in Japan reportedly showed that only less than 1% of people had used such services to claim their purchases.
Amazon Japan will work with convenience store operator FamilyMart Co. Ltd., supermarket chain Fuji Citio and Odakyu Electric Railway Co. Ltd. to install dozens of lockers mostly in the greater Tokyo area by year-end, according to the Nikkei. The company reportedly plans to expand the service to 500 to 1,000 locations nationwide in the next few years.
