Nuclear update: Hatch 1 shuts; Peach Bottom 3 curtailed

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability slipped to 91.45% early Feb. 28, down from 92.61% on Feb. 27 but still above the 89.61% reported on the same day in 2017.

Pulling down total output was a large curtailment at the Peach Bottom 3 plant in Pennsylvania, which is owned by Exelon Corp. and Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. The unit was operating at 18% early Feb. 28, dropping from full power on Feb. 27. The reason for the drop in production has not been disclosed.

In addition, Southern Co.'s Hatch 1 in Georgia was offline early Feb. 28 from 3% power early Feb. 27. The unit was recently restarted Feb. 26 following a refueling outage initiated Feb. 5.

Along with Hatch 1, four other units remain offline as of early Feb. 28.
