MMG Ltd. said mining operations at its Las Bambas copper project in Peru will start being impacted unless inbound logistics are restored within the next few days.
Local communities started putting roadblocks on various sections of a national public road Sept. 22 to prevent the company from transporting concentrates from the mine to the port, which has caused delays in some shipments to customers.
The communities are asking for compensation for land and use of the road, for the road to be declassified as a national road and included as part of the direct area of influence of Las Bambas, and for other demands.
The company said Oct. 10 that outbound logistics for Las Bambas have been impacted by roadblocks for over 100 days so far this year.
"In addition to significantly impacting the transport of concentrate, these conditions are also having an impact on our employees — many of whom are from the local area — and on local contractors and suppliers," the company said, adding that it is committed to working with communities and authorities to resolve the issues while investing in social development in the area.
