BHP invests in technology to convert CO2 into 'useful downstream products'

BHP Group said in a Sept. 12 company release that it has taken a strategic stake in Houston-based Cemvita Factory which is working to develop biomimetic technology. In a company release, BHP suggested the technology has the potential to convert carbon dioxide into "useful downstream products such as chemicals and polymers."

The technology mimics photosynthesis and other natural processes, according to the release. It is based on methods of synthetic biology that improves metabolic capacity of environmental-friendly photosynthetic microorganisms for carbon dioxide. The microorganisms may also be used to treat heavy metal or acidic contamination, utilizing and sequestering carbon dioxide.

The company said that it is interested in the potential for biomimetic technology to enhance remediation of mine-impacted soils and water, as BHP intends to reduce operational greenhouse emissions and environmental impact, and develop low-emissions technology such as increasing application of carbon capture, utilization and storage technology.

On Sept. 11, the Climate Leadership Council said that BHP Group joined the council as one of its founding members.
