Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America Inc., a unit of Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corp., is recalling 219,000 vehicles that were already part of an earlier wave of recalls involving Takata Corp. airbag issues.
Vehicles equipped with defective Takata airbags have been linked to fatalities and injuries across the world.
According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the latest recall covers certain 2003-2008 Corolla, 2005-2008 Corolla Matrix and Pontiac Vibe vehicles with an alternative front passenger airbag assembly replaced under a prior recall. The replacements were manufactured by a different supplier.
Under high temperature conditions, the airbag may not unfold and inflate as designed, increasing the risk of injury during a crash, according to the documents.
Toyota will start recalling the affected models on Sept. 25 and will have dealers replace the front passenger airbag assembly for free.
