Nuclear update: US output dips with curtailments at Prairie Island, Callaway

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability turned lower early March 14 to 87.93%, down from 88.47% on March 13 and also holding below the 88.92% posted on the same day in 2017.

Cutting U.S. total output was decreased production at two reactors. Xcel Energy Inc.'s Prairie Island 1 in Minnesota was operating at 40% power early March 14, down from 100% on March 13, and Ameren Corp.'s Callaway plant in Missouri was pegged at 70% early March 14, also down from full power on March 13.

Offsetting the curtailments was increased output at two other reactors. The R.E. Ginna plant in New York, which is owned by Exelon Corp. and EDF Group, saw production rise from 75% on March 13 to 99% early March 14, and Exelon's LaSalle 1 in Illinois was warming up at 1% early March 14, after being taken offline on Feb. 19 for planned seasonal work.

As of early March 14, ten units across the U.S. are in cold shutdown for various reasons.
