Germany's government appointed a 24-member group to plan out the country's exit from coal-fired power generation in an effort to meet ambitious climate goals by 2030, Reuters reported.
Utility companies such as RWE AG and Uniper SE say they are prepared and have developed their own phase-out plans stretching into the 2040s.
Half of Germany's coal capacity might be idled by 2030, according to the head of the national energy regulatory authority, if there are enough transmission networks in place to handle soaring wind and solar power volumes, the report said.
