Glencore Plc restarted operations at its Kamoto copper-cobalt joint venture in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with first copper cathodes produced Dec. 11, Reuters reported Dec. 12, citing CFO Steven Kalmin.
Glencore unit Katanga Mining Ltd., which operates the mine, suspended operations in 2015 but had vowed to press ahead with the planned investment of US$880 million into ongoing processing plant upgrades and the waste stripping of the KOV and Mashamba open pits at Kamoto.
Katanga Mining is expected to produce 150,000 tonnes of copper in 2018 and 300,000 tonnes in 2019, while cobalt output is pegged at 11,000 tonnes in 2018 and 34,000 tonnes in 2019.
