Sports streamer DAZN nearly doubled its usage in 2019

Sports streaming proponent DAZN's consumption level almost doubled during 2019.

According to initial usage numbers provided by the U.K.-based company, DAZN, now available in nine nations, streamed 507 million hours last year, a 98% rise from 256 million in 2018.

Soccer was by far the dominant sport for the over-the-top subscription service from Perform Group Ltd., with 314.6 million hours, or some 62% of its overall usage, followed by baseball (38.1 million) and motorsports (37.9 million). American football and boxing rounded out the top five with 37.2 million and 22.6 million hours, respectively. DAZN said it produced 107 events that eclipsed the 1 million-stream mark, with the measure counting live and on-demand viewing of more than one minute.

Relative to devices, DAZN disclosed that users most often tapped mobile phones (26%) to watch its fare, ranking ahead of set-top boxes/streaming sticks (23%), smart TVs (21%), desktop computers (17%) and game consoles (13%).

With major rights under contract into the early part of this decade, DAZN made its U.S. entry with combat sports, including boxing and mixed martial arts action, in September 2018. The service, which holds assorted rights within different countries, also operates in Austria, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and Switzerland.

The Dec. 7 rematch in which heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua regained his crowns by avenging his June 1 loss to Andy Ruiz Jr. was DAZN's most-streamed event in 2019.

The professional boxing debut of YouTubers KSI and Logan Paul on Nov. 9 was DAZN's fifth-most-streamed event, while the Serie A soccer game between Milan and Internazionale on Sept. 21 placed seventh.
