Sunrun to offer solar-as-a-service, battery system in Florida

Sunrun Inc. on June 6 said it will begin offering solar-as-a-service in Florida that will allow customers to lease solar equipment and produce electricity using their rooftop without dealing with the upfront cost of solar panels, equipment and installation.

In addition to solar-as-a-service, the residential solar and energy services company will begin offering its home solar and battery system, Brightbox, starting June 7. The system will provide backup electricity to households in the event of a power outage, as hurricane season approaches.

During Hurricane Irma, more than 15 million Floridians lost power, the company said.

Sunrun will initially launch these offerings in the TECO Energy Inc., Duke Energy Florida LLC and Orlando Utilities Commission service areas, with plans to expand into the rest of the state shortly.

"In offering Floridians solar-as-a-service, households in the Sunshine State are given the freedom to make, control, and store their own energy," said Lynn Jurich, CEO and co-founder of Sunrun.
