The S&P 500 dropped 9.0% in December, pushing the index to a negative 4.4% return for 2018. Only 16 companies in the S&P 500 index posted positive returns last month.
Gold producer Newmont Mining Corp. led the index with a 7.6% return last month, followed by Broadcom Inc. and Dollar Tree Inc. at 7.1% and 4.1%, respectively.
Meanwhile, shares in pharmaceutical company Perrigo Co. PLC lost 37.8% in December, the worst return for any constituent in the index. Conagra Brands Inc. and FedEx Corp. were close behind with losses of 34.0% and 29.3%, respectively.
