Warner Bros.' "War Dogs" continued to dominate the top spot on comScore Inc.'s video-on-demand rankings for the week ended Dec. 4, while Sony Corp.'s "Don't Breathe" nabbed the No. 2 spot.

Starring Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto and Stephen Lang, "Don't Breathe" follows three friends who break into a house owned by a blind man for what they think will be an easy score. However, things go awry when the man turns out to be not as helpless as the trio expected.

The thriller made about $89.2 million at the domestic box office and $63.7 million overseas for a worldwide total of $152.9 million, compared to a production budget of $9.9 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. According to comScore estimates, "Don't Breathe" grossed $89.1 million in the U.S.

The movie was well received by critics, garnering a "fresh" rating on RottenTomatoes.com, with the consensus that it "smartly twists its sturdy premise to offer a satisfyingly tense, chilling addition to the home invasion genre that's all the more effective for its simplicity." On Metacritic, the movie received a score of 71 out of 100. Regular audiences were also receptive to "Don't Breathe." On RottenTomatoes.com, the audience score was 80% and on Metacritic the user score was 7.2. IMDb's rating stood at 7.2 as of Dec. 14.

Walt Disney Co.'s remake "Pete's Dragon" was in the No. 3 spot for the period. The fantasy-adventure tells the tale of an orphaned boy, Pete, who befriends a dragon and has to deal with the repercussions when the pair are discovered by local townspeople. The remake stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence, and Robert Redford.

"Pete's Dragon" made $76.2 million at the U.S. box office, according to comScore, and $66.1 million abroad for a global take of about $142.3 million, compared with a production budget of $65 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

The fantasy did well with critics and general audiences. It received a "certified fresh" rating of 86% on RottenTomatoes.com, with the critic consensus that the live-action movie "continues Disney's current live-action winning streak with an update that gives the original a visual overhaul without overwhelming its sweet, soulful charm." The audience score on the website was 77%. "Pete's Dragon" received a 71 out of 100 on Metacritic, with a user score of 6.7, while IMDb's rating was 6.9.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, Disney's live-action "The BFG" was at the No. 4 spot for the period. Based on the eponymous novel by British writer Roald Dahl, the movie tells the story of an orphan girl who befriends a benevolent giant, dubbed the "Big Friendly Giant." The two go to giant country, where they try to stop the man-eating giants who are invading the human world. The movie stars Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall and Bill Hader.

The fantasy-adventure generated $55.5 million at the domestic box office and about $123 million at the foreign box office for a worldwide total of $178.4 million, compared to a production budget of $140 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. ComScore estimated the domestic box office revenue to be $55.4 million.

"The BFG" received a "certified fresh" 75% rating on RottenTomatoes.com, which wrote that the movie "minimizes the darker elements of Roald Dahl's classic in favor of a resolutely good-natured, visually stunning, and largely successful family-friendly adventure." The audience score on the website was 60%. On Metacritic, the film received a 66 out of 100 and a user score of 6.2, with IMDb's rating standing at 6.5.

Meanwhile, Disney's Buena Vista topped the 2016 box office gross chart for the major studios analyzed, with a take of about $2.61 billion, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data for the year through week 49.

Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. was at the No. 2 spot with a box office total of $1.84 billion, followed by Comcast Corp.'s Universal at No. 3 with about $1.26 billion. Sony was at No. 4 for the measured period with $893.9 million, while Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. was at No. 5 with $336.9 million.
