Google makes other search engines available on Android in Europe

Alphabet Inc.'s Google LLC will allow Android users in Europe to choose a default search engine from four providers, including Google.

Google unveiled the options for each European country, based on the results of an auction.

In the auction, search providers declared the price they are willing to pay each time a user selects them from the choice screen in a certain country. The top three bidders became part of the choice screen for that country.

The choice will appear during initial device setup for devices distributed in the European Economic Area from March 1. The initial search engine options for each European country will take effect from March 1 to June 30 and will change based on another auction round.

The auction is scheduled to take place quarterly.

Google required the search providers to provide a "general search service," to provide local language support in the country they are participating in and to have an app in Google Play. The search provider must also provide Google will technical assets for the implementation.

The move to offer other options for search providers comes after the European Union imposed a €4.3 billion antitrust fine against Google in relation to its Android mobile operating system.
