Raytheon Co. was awarded a $2.3 billion contract by the U.S. Department of Defense for engineering services to support the Phased Array Tracking Radar Intercept on Target, or PATRIOT, system.
The agency said work locations and funding will be determined with each order and gave an estimated completion date of Jan. 31, 2023.
Raytheon said it has received a $235 million modernization task order, the first of five annual indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity task order awards.
The company will be tasked to develop ways to enhance the PATRIOT system's ability to detect and defeat threats including tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and military aircraft. It will also look to reduce the system's life cycle costs through modernized hardware and reliability improvements, among other upgrades.
The PATRIOT system provides integrated air and missile defense to 14 countries, which Raytheon said will fund the system upgrades. These countries are the U.S., Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Taiwan, Greece, Spain, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Romania.
