Walmex to install Wi-Fi in stores to promote e-commerce

Wal-Mart de México SAB de CV, the Mexican subsidiary of retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc., will make Wi-Fi available across all but one of its chains by mid-2018 to promote its budding e-commerce business, Reuters reported, citing the company.

The supermarket operator will install Wi-Fi throughout all its stores except warehouse-style Bodega Aurrera Express, according to the report. About 80% of shoppers at Bodega Aurrera reportedly own smartphones without data plans.

The news agency said the move will allow Walmex to collect user data and accelerate its online sales by encouraging shoppers to use technology. Walmex reportedly is hoping the free internet access will make "internet-resistant" customers become more comfortable online and ultimately improve its nascent e-commerce business, which Reuters said accounted for less than 1% of its third-quarter sales.

The data collected from users who use its website will allow the company to customize online and store offerings and quickly adjust inventory and prices, Reuters said.
