AES begins operations at 1st LNG facility in Central America

AES Corp. started commercial operations at the first LNG facility in Panama and Central America, according to an Oct. 18 news release.

The hub is located in the corporation's Colón plant, which consists of a 180,000-cubic-meter LNG tank and a 381-MW combined-cycle power plant, which had been using gas from temporary sources since it began operations in 2018.

"The inauguration of the AES Colón storage facility is a significant milestone toward transforming the Central American energy sector, and enabling a safer and more sustainable energy future," AES President and CEO Andrés Gluski said in the release. The company has reserved 80% of the terminal's capacity for the use of companies headquartered in Panama and Central America.

AES intends to build a similar project in Vietnam.

AES provides sustainable energy to 14 countries through its portfolio of distribution businesses and renewable generation facilities.
