Top 10 VOD titles: 'The Hitman's Bodyguard' shoots its way to the top

Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.'s "The Hitman's Bodyguard" nabbed the No. 1 spot on comScore Inc.'s rankings of top 10 video-on-demand titles for the week ended Nov. 26.

The action-comedy stars Ryan Reynolds as the world's top protection agent who is called upon to guard the life of a notorious hitman, played by Samuel L. Jackson. The movie also stars Gary Oldman, who plays a merciless Eastern European dictator with a bone to pick with the protagonists, and Salma Hayek, who plays the hitman's equally notorious wife.

"The Hitman's Bodyguard" pulled in about $75.5 million at the domestic box office and an additional $101.1 million overseas for a worldwide take of $176.6 million, compared to a production budget of $30 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. As per comScore estimates, the film made $75.4 million domestically.

The movie received a much more favorable reception from regular audiences than critics. According to RottenTomatoes.com's critic consensus, "The Hitman's Bodyguard coasts on Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds' banter — but doesn't get enough mileage to power past an overabundance of action-comedy clichés." As of Dec. 6, the movie's rating stood at 40% while the audience score was at 69%. On Metacritic, the metascore was a 47 out of 100 and the user score was a 6.4, while IMDb's rating stood at 7.0.

Taking the No. 2 spot for the measured period was NBCUniversal Media LLC's action-thriller "Atomic Blonde." The movie stars Charlize Theron as an undercover MI6 agent who is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to deliver a priceless dossier out of the city on the eve of the Wall's collapse.

"Atomic Blonde" made $51.6 million at the domestic box office and $44.1 million overseas for a global take of $95.7 million, compared to a production budget of $30 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. ComScore estimated the film's domestic gross at $51.5 million.

The movie scored a tomatometer rating of 76% and an audience score of 65% on RottenTomatoes.com, with a critics consensus that "Atomic Blonde gets enough mileage out of its stylish action sequences — and ever-magnetic star — to make up for a narrative that's somewhat less hard-hitting than its protagonist." Metacritic's score was a 63 out of 100 and the user score on the website was a 6.6, while IMDb's rating stood at a 6.8.

Lionsgate also landed the No. 3 spot with "Wind River." The thriller stars Jeremy Renner as a veteran tracker with the Fish and Wildlife Service who teams up with a rookie FBI agent, played by Elizabeth Olsen, to investigate the murder of a local girl on a remote Native American Reservation.

The movie, which pulled in $33.7 million at the domestic box office, received a very positive reception from both critics and regular viewers. "Wind River lures viewers into a character-driven mystery with smart writing, a strong cast, and a skillfully rendered setting that delivers the bitter chill promised by its title," read RottenTomatoes.com's critics consensus. The movie's tomatometer rating on the website was an 88% and the audience score was even higher, at 91%. Metacritic's score was a 73 out of 100 and the website's user score was a 7.7. IMDb's score stood at a 7.8.
