Coal India Ltd.'s provisional coal production for the April-December 2017 period showed it produced 383.93 million tonnes, which is 6% short of its 406.58 million tonnes target, the Press Trust of India reported Jan. 2.
Although production saw a 1.6% increase year over year, the failure to meet its nine-month period target prompted concerns that the company may miss its annual production target of 600 million tonnes in 2017-2018.
To make up for the shortfall, the company is working to produce in excess of 2 million tonnes of coal per day, the report said, citing a company official.
In December 2017, Coal India produced 54.63 million tonnes of coal, down by more than 7% from its production target of 58.89 million tonnes.
