China's BYD to launch self-driving cars in 3 years

Chinese electric car maker BYD Co. Ltd. is collaborating with Baidu Inc. to launch self-driving cars in three years, South China Morning Post reported Sept. 5.

Baidu's President Zhang Yaqin said that the company's Qin Pro, a plug-in hybrid expected to hit the market in September, will be used to road test Apollo platform, an open self-driving platform by Baidu that BYD joined in April.

Wang, however, did not elaborate on the number of self-driving cars BYD aims to make initially.

Baidu's Chinese rivals Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Tencent Holdings Ltd. are also working to develop next-generation vehicles, the report added.
