Report: China's online travel agency Ctrip questioned over faulty bookings

Japan's tourism agency and industry groups questioned Chinese online travel agency Ctrip.com International Ltd. Dec. 18 after its Japanese website allegedly allowed customers to book accommodations that had already been reserved, The Nikkei Asian Review reported Dec. 19.

Ctrip's Japanese site reportedly had at least 37 cases, involving 10 partner businesses, in which customers were led to believe that there were vacancies in hotels or ryokan inns when there were none, the report said, adding the customers who tried booking such accommodations even received confirmations.

Ctrip suspended transactions with the partner businesses involved, the report said.

The company is also facing allegations of selling fraudulent packages that included higher-than-normal prices, although it has denied being involved in dishonest behavior, the report said.

Ctrip did not immediately respond to a request for comment from S&P Global Market Intelligence.
