Gap Inc. said March 14 that it is encouraging its supplier factories to start paying workers through digital methods by 2020.
The apparel chain set the goal for its tier 1 suppliers, which comprises about 800 factories across 30 countries.
Gap said that more than 60% of its supplier factories are already providing digital payments, but it is seeking wider use of methods such as online transfers to bank accounts and mobile wallets to replace cash-based pay systems.
The retailer also joined the Better Than Cash Alliance, a program under the U.N. Capital Development Fund. The alliance brings together governments, companies and organizations to support the global transition to digital payments.
