TransCanada to change name to TC Energy to identify as North American business

TransCanada Corp. plans to change its name to TC Energy, in a bid to express its company's business as encompassing the whole of its North American energy infrastructure operations.

TransCanada shareholders are expected to approve a special resolution for the name change at the next annual and special meeting of shareholders, scheduled for the second quarter, according to a Jan. 9 news release. Upon approval, the new name will become effective after the meeting, and the company would continue trading under the ticker symbol TRP on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges.

The announcement was made as TransCanada launched its annual Employee Forum series in Mexico City. "While our strategy and priorities remain the same, we believe the new name will help to further unite our employees and enable us to better connect with our diverse stakeholders," said Russ Girling, president and CEO of TransCanada.

TransCanada filed for a number of new trade names under the Canadian government's trademarks journal in late 2017.

TransCanada operates natural gas and liquids pipelines, power generation and gas storage facilities across Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
