Report: Iceland appoints prime minister, calls early elections

The government of Iceland appointed Sigurður Ingi Jóhannssonprime minister, replacing Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, who in the wake of protests amidthe Panama Papers revelations, Reuters reported April 6.

Iceland called for elections in the autumn, according to thereport.

Gunnlaugsson was under significant pressure to resign afterdocuments leaked from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca revealed that he onceowned an offshore company with claims on Iceland's three collapsed banks.

Jóhannsson reportedly said the government would continuewith its major projects, the elimination of capital controls in particular.
