U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that there was "absolutely no collusion" between his presidential campaign and Russia, Reuters reported Dec. 2.
Trump made the comment a day after Michael Flynn, the president's former national security adviser, admitted to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his conversations in December 2016 with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Flynn made the admission as part of a plea bargain with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who was appointed earlier in the year to investigate allegations that Russia tried to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Flynn served as an adviser to Trump's campaign and briefly worked in the White House as national security adviser. The retired U.S. Army lieutenant general resigned in February after it was discovered that he misled Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with Kislyak.
Trump told reporters that what has been shown is no collusion, the news outlet reported.
"There's been absolutely no collusion, so we're very happy," Trump said Saturday as he left the White House.
Later in the day, Trump tweeted on the matter, calling Flynn's actions lawful. "I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies," Trump wrote. "It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!"
