Netflix, Mediaset strike co-production deal; BBC history show goes global

The Program Guide's global edition highlights recent programming announcements from various networks and online video platforms around the world.

On TV

* Broadcasters in Brazil and Sweden commissioned local remakes of Endemol Shine Group Ltd.'s culinary format "MasterChef: All Stars." According to C21 Media, Endemol Shine Brazil will produce a 10-part version for Brazilian networks Bandeirantes and Discovery Home Health, while Endemol Shine Nordics-owned Meter TV will create the Swedish adaptation for TV4 (SE).

* European broadcasters, such as Sweden's Sveriges Television AB, Denmark's DR, Spain's Telefónica SA, Norway's NRK, Czech Republic's Prima and Czech TV, have entered into presales agreement for BBC Studios Ltd.'s "Seven Worlds, One Planet," TBI Vision reported. Discovery Latin America LLC also took the show as part of an existing partnership. Sony BBC Earth in India and BBC Earth channels across Africa, Canada, Nordics, Asia, Poland and central and eastern Europe will also be premiering the series. The natural history show is co-produced by BBC America (US), Tencent Holdings Ltd.'s Tencent Penguin Pictures, ZDF (DE), France Télévisions SA and China's CCTV-9.

* AMC (US) renewed "The Walking Dead" for an 11th season, Vulture reported. Lauren Cohan will return to the postapocalyptic series as Maggie Greene.

* "¿POR QUÉ ODIAMOS?," a six-part series which explores the emotion of 'hate,' will air on Discovery en Español (US) on Oct. 13. The series is executive produced by Alex Gibney and Steven Spielberg.

* All3Media Ltd. tapped Atresmedia Corporación de Medios de Comunicación SA for the Spanish remake of "Liar," TBI Vision reported. A second season of the scripted thriller will be aired in the U.K. in 2020.

* RTL Group SA's RTL 4 commissioned EndemolShine Nederland BV unit Simpel Media to produce eight episodes of "Your Home Made Perfect." Meanwhile, TF1 Group commissioned EndemolShine France SAS to produce the same series using VR technology and visual effects.

* HBO (US) struck an overall deal with Julie Andem, creator of hit Norwegian TV show "Skam," TBI Vision reported. Under the two-year agreement, Andem will create and develop shows for the premium cable network.

* British Broadcasting Corp. acquired coming-of-age series "Looking For Alaska," which will exclusively air in the U.K. on BBC Three (UK) via the BBC iPlayer from Oct. 19. Paramount Television and Fake Empire co-produced the eight-part series.

Online

* Amazon.com Inc. picked up the global rights to USA (US) drama "Treadstone," Deadline.com reported. Prime Video will roll out the series outside of the U.S. in January 2020 after its USA Network debut Oct. 15.

* Netflix Inc. ordered a 10-episode anime series from Japanese director Masaaki Yuasa titled "Japan Sinks 2020," Vulture reported. Based on a science-fiction novel, the show follows a string of natural disasters that hit Japan as a team of scientists tries to convince the disbelieving government of the imminent threat. The series will premiere in 2020.

* Amazon Prime Video commissioned an Italian version of Endemol Shine's unscripted format "Celebrity Hunted — Caccia all'uomo." EndemolShine Italy is producing the local original series for Amazon which will debut on Prime Video in 2020.

* Netflix confirmed it entered in an agreement with Mediaset SpA to jointly produce Italian films, Reuters reported. The films are expected to be available globally on Netflix in 2020. Mediaset will also air them on its free-to-air channels in Italy 12 months after their premiere on Netflix.

* Netflix original series "The End of the F***ing World" will return to the streaming platform Nov. 5 for a second season, according to an official tweet.

* In more Netflix news, the streaming giant green lighted "Katla," an eight part original series that will begin production in 2020. The show is set a year after the Katla volcano erupted in Vik, Iceland.

* WarnerMedia LLC's upcoming streaming service, HBO Max, struck a deal with "Sesame Street" producer Sesame Workshop to bring the show's 50-year library, along with five new seasons of the show, to the streaming platform. The agreement also includes four new series.

* Walt Disney Co. struck a content deal with Amazon Prime Video's streaming service in Latin America, Variety reported. The deal, which runs until September 2020, features a selection of Disney titles for Prime Video, including all four "Toy Story" movies, "The Lion King" and "Avengers: Endgame."

* Netflix renewed hit series "Stranger Things" for a fourth season. The streaming platform also signed series creators and showrunners, the Duffer brothers, to a multiyear film and series overall deal.
