Report: Enbridge temporarily shuts down Line 5 oil pipes over high waves

Enbridge Inc. shut down its Line 5 oil system running under the Straits of Mackinac due to bad weather, following its safety improvement agreement with the state of Michigan, The Associated Press reported.

The company agreed to halt operations on the line, which was recently discovered to have some protective coating damage, whenever waves reach eight feet or higher for more than an hour in the channel connecting Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. On Dec. 5, the waves went over nine feet, the report said.

The twin line is slated to resume operations when weather conditions improve.

Line 5 moves oil from Wisconsin to refineries in Ontario.
