More than 1,000 MW of new generating capacity, mostly wind and solar resources, were added to the U.S. grid in October, according to a compilation by S&P Global Market Intelligence. More than half of the capacity additions were in the Texas Regional Entity reliability region, which overlays the Electric Reliability Council of Texas market. One new project was announced.
In October, Apex Clean Energy announced plans to build the Dakota Range Wind III & IV project. The 302-MW project in Robert County, S.D., which was the only announced power generation project during the month, has an estimated construction cost of $588.9 million. It neighbors Apex's proposed Dakota Range Wind I & II project in Codington County, S.D., which is to be acquired by Xcel Energy Inc.
During October, 24 projects totaling 1,031 MW were completed. Wind accounted for the majority of capacity additions at 68%, followed by solar with 23% and gas at 10%. The largest single project completed during the month was the 298-MW El Cabo Wind Project in Torrance County, N.M., owned by Avangrid Renewables LLC. The plant has not yet been declared to be in commercial operation. When it is, its output will be sold under a 20-year contract. The second- and third-largest projects installed in October were also wind facilities. Enbridge Inc.'s 249-MW SANTACRU (Chapman Ranch Wind I) Wind Farm and Akuo Energy USA's 149-MW FERMI (Val Verde Wind) (Rocksprings) plants are both located in Texas. The output of the Val Verde plant is sold under a 12-year contract.
The only completed gas plant was CHAMON (Castleman Chamon) Project, which had a capacity of 100 MW. The plant is owned by Castleman Power Systems International LLC, a Houston-based developer of small utility and industrial power systems, and is located in Harris County, Texas.
Of the many solar projects completed in October, the Stuttgart Solar Project in Arkansas, owned by NextEra Energy Resources LLC, was the largest, at 81 MW. The output will be sold to local utility Entergy Arkansas Inc.
