DISH, CBS resolve dispute; FTC 'evaluating' Uber breach

Top News

* DISH Network Corp. resolved its carriage dispute with CBS Corp. The multiyear agreement covers CBS Corp.-owned and operated local stations as well as cable channels CBS Sports Network (US), POP (US) and Smithsonian Channel (US), DISH said.

* The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is "closely evaluating the serious issues" related to the way Uber Technologies Inc. handled a data breach in 2016, Reuters reports, citing an FTC spokesman. Without sharing other details, the spokesman said the agency was aware of press reports regarding the cyberattack that exposed about 57 million users and drivers in October last year.

* The states of Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York and Connecticut are investigating Uber over the data breach in 2016, Recode reports. A company representative said the company is in contact with "several state attorney general offices and the FTC to discuss this issue, and we stand ready to cooperate with them going forward."

* The success or failure of the Justice Department's lawsuit to block the AT&T Inc./Time Warner Inc. deal may depend on proving the combined company produces "must-watch content," something that may be difficult in today's fragmented entertainment landscape. AT&T is looking to combine its nationwide wireless network and nationwide DIRECTV satellite television operations with the cable networks of Time Warner in a transaction valued at $106.40 billion, including debt.

TV Networks

* Familiar hosts team on new ESPN Radio simulcast succeeding long-running "Mike & Mike" morning drive franchise. Bowing Nov. 27, "Golic and Wingo" will air in the same weekday 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. ET time slot as "Mike & Mike," and will be simulcast on ESPN2 (US) before navigating to ESPNU (US) in January 2018.

Internet & OTT

* Google Inc.'s YouTube imposed stricter policies for kids' content on the video service and YouTube Kids. According to an official blog post, YouTube removed ads from inappropriate videos targeting families, blocked inappropriate comments for videos featuring minors, improved guidance for content creators, and toughened up community guidelines.

* The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has launched a probe into complaints that TripAdvisor Inc. removed rape reports for Mexican hotels, the New York Post reports, citing Maureen Ohlhausen, acting chairman of the FTC. In a letter to Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., Ohlhausen said removing such reviews could stop other consumers from making well-informed purchase decisions and harm businesses that work hard to earn positive reviews.

* Netflix Inc. green-lighted a new Korean original stand-up comedy special featuring Yoo Byung-Jae. The streaming giant said it will premiere the comedy special globally in 2018.

* Deutsche Telekom AG subsidiaries struck a deal gain access to Netflix's content. The deal would allow Deutsche Telekom customers in Germany, Poland, Croatia, Greece and Romania to have unlimited streaming capabilities on Netflix over mobile networks, the company said.

* In more Netflix news, the company placed an order of its first Belgian/Dutch co-produced series, called "Undercover." The company will premiere the 10-part series in 2019, according to a news release.

* Netflix will premiere its first Colombian original series in 2019, Deadline.com reports. Production on the untitled series, which follows a young detective and her partner deep into the Amazon as they investigate a series of bizarre murders, will begin in summer 2018, according to the report.

Technology

* U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan asked an Uber customer to go into arbitration to settle his price-fixing claims against the company, Reuters reports. Rakoff also dismissed the customer's claims against former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, though the plaintiff has the option to arbitrate.

Film

* Forecasters see promise in Pixar's "Coco" following the disappointment of "Justice League." The studio will lean on a proven long Thanksgiving weekend to release animated musical "Coco" about a young boy's journey to the spirit realm in Dia de los Muertos stylings.

The day ahead

Early morning futures indicators pointed to a higher opening for the U.S. market.

In Asia, the Hang Seng rose 0.53% to 29,866.32, while the Nikkei 225 climbed 0.12% to 22,550.85.

In Europe, around midday, the FTSE 100 increased 0.03% to 7,419.29 and the Euronext 100 rose 0.25% to 1,043.34.

On the macro front

The weekly bill settlement report, the two-year FRN note settlement report, the PMI Composite Flash, the Fed balance sheet and the money supply report are due out today.
