Google to invest €3B in European data centers

Google LLC plans to invest €3 billion to expand its data centers in Europe over the next two years, CEO Sundar Pichai said in a Sept. 20 blog post.

The intended outlay will include a €600 million investment in the expansion of the Alphabet Inc. unit's data center presence in Hamina, Finland. The planned expansion is expected to support about 4,300 jobs in Finland per year on average, starting in the next two years.

The company also announced 10 renewable energy projects, which will make way for the construction of more than €1 billion in new energy infrastructure in the European Union. The projects include two new wind energy projects in Finland, which is intended to match the electricity consumption at its Finnish data center with local carbon-free sources.

The news on additional investments in data centers comes after Google announced in June that it plans to pend an additional €1 billion on data centers in the Netherlands.
