Netflix ships 5 billion DVDs; Oracle appeals JEDI ruling; Charter sells Navisite

Top News

* Netflix Inc. shipped 5 billion DVDs to its members since it started the DVD-by-mail subscription service 21 years ago, the company announced in a tweet. According to a report by Variety, the streaming giant reached the 1 billion mark by early 2007.

* Oracle Corp. appealed the decision by the Court of Federal Claims regarding the $10 billion JEDI cloud contract procurement process. In a statement, Oracle General Counsel Dorian Daley questioned the JEDI procurement process, while noting that the procurement was unlawful on several grounds. The move comes after the Pentagon ordered a review of its multibillion-dollar cloud computing contract.

* Charter Communications Inc. agreed to sell its unit Navisite LLC to RDX, a provider of managed IT services owned by investment firm Madison Dearborn Partners LLC. Following the transaction, RDX will own and operate the assets including client relationships, employees, fixed assets, leases and Navisite-operated facilities.

* French President Emmanuel Macron announced Aug. 26 at the G-7 summit that he will eliminate his country's digital tax once an international digital services policy is created. The 3% tax covers online advertisements aimed at French users, e-commerce platforms and the sale of user data in France. It applies to companies with at least €750 million in worldwide revenue from those services and €25 million in France.

Film & OTT

* IMDb TV, the free ad-supported streaming service launched by Amazon.com Inc.'s IMDb.com Inc., can now be accessed on mobile devices, TechCrunch.com reports. The iOS and Android apps will let users stream content from the service's library of free movies and TV series.

* Netflix unveiled the premiere dates for three Chinese-language original series, Variety reports. The streaming giant will stream crime thriller "Nowhere Man" on Oct. 31, action comedy "Triad Princess" will start streaming Dec. 6, while period thriller "The Ghost Bride" will start streaming in January 2020.

* The Motion Picture Association of America fired Steven Fabrizio as general counsel of the agency after he was arrested in Washington, D.C., on accusations of sexual assault and blackmail, TheWrap.com reports, citing an official statement. The agency tapped Daniel Robbins as an interim replacement for Fabrizio.

Technology

* Apple Inc. patched a security flaw that it had mistakenly reintroduced with a recent software update, according to a company post. The tech giant also acknowledged the @Pwn20wnd team for pointing out the issue.

* Mobile games company Playtika Ltd. bought Finnish mobile game publisher Seriously, VentureBeat.com's GameBeat channel reports, citing a confirmation by the companies. While financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, GameBeat reported the deal price to be $275 million.

* Technology company Cisco Systems Inc. plans to acquire the Salt Lake City-based CloudCherry for an undisclosed amount. CloudCherry is a customer experience management company that provides predictive analytics and customer journey mapping services.

* Apple halted a project that would have allowed iPhones to serve as peer-to-peer walkie-talkies for users, The Information reports, citing two sources with knowledge of the matter. The project could have helped people communicate in areas without cellular connectivity, according to the report.

* Amazon continued to lead the global smart speaker market in the second quarter by shipping 6.6 million Echo smart speakers, followed by Baidu Inc. at No. 2 with 4.5 million shipments, according to a research report by Canalys. Alphabet Inc. unit Google LLC slipped to the third spot with 4.3 million shipments, while Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Xiaomi Corp. were No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

Wireless

* John Donovan will retire as CEO of AT&T Inc. unit AT&T Communications, effective Oct. 1. Donovan joined AT&T in 2008 as chief technology officer and was named CEO of AT&T Communications in July 2017.

The day ahead

Early morning futures indicators pointed to a higher opening for the U.S. market.

In Asia, the Hang Seng fell 0.06% to 25,664.07, and the Nikkei 225 rose 0.96% to 20,456.08.

In Europe, around midday, the FTSE 100 was down 0.19% to 7,081.68, and the Euronext 100 was up 0.20% to 1,039.93.

On the macro front

The Redbook Index for retail sales, S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller home price index, the Federal Housing Finance Agency house price index, the consumer confidence index and the Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index are due out today.
