Ford February US sales fall 6.9% on lower SUV, car numbers

Ford Motor Co.'s U.S. sales for February declined 6.9% as SUV and car sales declined 12.3% and 12.1%, respectively.

The company sold a total of 194,132 vehicles, down from 208,440 vehicles in February 2017. Retail sales were down 8.5% while fleet sales fell by 3.8% for the month. Fleet sales accounted for 36.6% of the total for the month, which was 1.2 percentage points higher than the prior-year period.

The average transaction price for the auto manufacturer was $36,200, considerably above the $32,200 industry average.

Ford F-Series pickups sold well, with 68,243 trucks moving, the highest February total in 18 years. Retail sales of the Lincoln Navigator SUV also grew strongly, up by 60.1% from last February.

Ford has gross stock of 717,561 vehicles, an 89-day supply — including stock on the ground with dealers and in transit. The on-ground stock with dealers totals 572,470 vehicles, representing a 71-day supply.
