Alibaba, semiconductor maker NXP tout partnership

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s cloud computing business will work with NXP Semiconductors NV, the processor maker said Dec. 12, a move that could bolster the Chinese e-commerce giant's smart home and payment offerings.

The companies have already added Alibaba's AliOS operating system to NXP processors, according to a statement from NXP. The combination will allow the Dutch semiconductor maker and Alibaba to develop electronic devices for a wide range of uses. The technology is already being used in speakers that are part of smart home systems and QR code payment applications, NXP said.

"We share the same vision as NXP on providing advanced and secure [internet of things] solutions for an 'everything connected' world," Alibaba Cloud General Manager Ku Wei said in the statement.

Alibaba cited cloud computing as a key part of a collaboration it announced with Ford Motor Co., under which the two companies will experiment with technology to sell cars and serve customers.
