'Fixer Upper,' 'Jurassic World' top series, movie on Sling TV in 2018

DISH Network Corp.'s Sling TV said "Fixer Upper," the Joanna and Chip Gaines remodeling series that has ended its original run on HGTV (US), was its most popular series in 2018, followed by CBS (US)'s "The Big Bang Theory," FOX (US)'s "Family Guy," HGTV's "House Hunters," and Food Network (US)'s "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives."

DISH said the rankings were based on viewing trends of subscribers to its Sling Orange and/or Sling Blue and Extras viewing packages between Jan. 1 and Nov. 27.

Looking at time-shifted programming, A&E (US)'s "Live PD" was the most recorded show on Sling's Cloud DVR, displacing AMC (US)'s "The Walking Dead" from the top spot. The FIFA 2018 World Cup was third, while "WWE Monday Night Raw" on USA (US) and MSNBC (US)'s "The Rachel Maddow Show" switched places from 2017, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, in 2018.

For the year's news programming, Sling TV subscribers cast the most votes for midterm election coverage on Nov. 6, ahead of the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19. Coverage of Hurricane Michael on Oct. 10, the follow-up to the midterm election results on Nov. 7, and the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation hearing Sept. 27 completed the top five most watched news events.

For live events, Sling TV viewers proved to be big college football fans, with ESPN (US)'s coverage of the College Football Playoff championship game between Alabama and Georgia and the semifinal match-ups of Georgia-Oklahoma and Alabama-Clemson ranking first, second and fourth, respectively, for most popular live programming. Midterm election night coverage was third. TNT (US)'s presentation of Game 7 of the NBA Western Conference finals, in which Golden State defeated Houston, was fifth.

As for movies, "Jurassic World" was the most viewed title, ahead of "Step Brothers," "Deadpool," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "The Day After Tomorrow".

"The Incredibles" and "Black Panther" were the top rentals, followed by "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," "Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War" and "Thor: Ragnarok."
