Report: Adidas India to close stores

German sports apparel maker Adidas AG will close nonperforming stores in India as part of its restructuring plan in the country, Times News Network reported March 8, citing unnamed sources.

Adidas India already moved some product lines, including Originals, Football and Premium Running, overseas to places such as Dubai, the report said.

Additionally, the company reportedly adopted a new organizational structure in which heads of several roles, such as marketing or human resources, may report directly to its Dubai office.

An Adidas India spokesperson told the news outlet, "Our commitment to India remains unchanged. We will continue to invest in creating exciting brand experiences for Indian consumers and to drive our global strategy of 'Creating the New.'"

In September 2017, the retailer was reported to be considering reducing its workforce in the country by about 25% to cut costs.

Sportswear maker Nike Inc. also reportedly started downsizing its operations in India in 2017 in line with its global restructuring process.
