Report: CBS board to discuss Viacom merger

CBS Corp.'s board will likely discuss a potential combination with Viacom Inc. during its regularly scheduled meeting Feb. 1, Reuters reported Jan. 31, citing unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter.

Viacom CEO Bob Bakish and CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves discussed the potential deal in January. Moonves, who had resisted a combination, is reportedly now open to the idea.

National Amusements Inc., the holding company that controls 80% of the voting stock in Viacom and CBS, previously encouraged the two media conglomerates to explore a deal in September 2016.

However, the company withdrew the proposal in December 2016, saying that after "careful assessment and meetings with the leadership of both companies, we have concluded that this is not the right time to merge the companies."

Viacom and CBS spokespeople declined to comment to Reuters on the matter.
