Ford January sales fall 6.6% with lower car, fleet results

Ford Motor Co. reported a 6.6% decline in year-over-year January sales with a 23.3% decline in passenger car sales.

Car fleet sales were down 12% with 45,956 vehicles sold, owing to a planned change in delivery timing of daily rental sales. Retail sales also fell by 4.3% in the first month of the year.

SUV sales were down 5.9% in January compared to the prior year, while truck sales increased by 2.2% for the same period.

The average transaction price for the auto manufacturer was $37,000, significantly higher than the $32,100 industry average.

Among individual products, the F-Series pickup posted its best sales numbers since 2004 with 58,937 units sold. Mustang retail sales were up 10.7% with 4,732 vehicles sold. Lincoln Navigator retail sales were also up by 131.7% with 1,288 vehicles sold.

The company in January had a gross stock, including stock in transit, of 695,082 units in all segments which amounts to 108 days' supply. The on-ground stock with dealers totals 556,445 unit across the board, representing 86 days' supply.

Despite the overall sales decline, Ford vice president for U.S. marketing, sales and service Mark LaNeve said the healthy economy is boosting the auto industry. He also noted that there is strong demand for not only SUVs and pickups, but also for high trim versions of vehicles.
