Netflix rival iflix officially launches in Africa

Iflix is launching its streaming service in sub-Saharan Africa with the establishment of iflix Africa, which will extend the company's footprint to 23 countries.

Iflix Africa will have its headquarters in Cape Town, South Africa, with platform launches planned for Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe during the second and third quarters. The company said additional regional markets will be added in a few months.

The company said June 1 that it will add acclaimed African shows and films to its platform, and is also eyeing exclusive African content.

Iflix recently launched in the Middle East and North Africa via a partnership with Kuwait-based telecom company Zain Group.

The streaming service received more than $90 million in funding in March to support its international expansion.
