Vale fined 30M reais over pollution, licensing issues at Ilha da Guaiba terminal

The town of Mangaratiba in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro state slapped Vale SA with a fine of 30 million reais, citing pollution problems and the alleged lack of an operating license at the company's Ilha da Guaiba iron ore terminal, Reuters reported March 11.

The city's environment department closed the terminal, which was also closed briefly in January after the deadly dam breach at the Feijao iron ore mine in the Minas Gerais state.

Mayor Alan Costa said the miner needs to "comply with environment laws."

Vale said it has all the necessary licenses to operate the port terminal, and that it would take adequate measures to the port operations, without elaborating.

According to the Brazilian port regulator, about 40 million tonnes of iron ore go through the Ilha da Guaiba terminal per annum.

As of March 11, US$1 was equivalent to 3.84 Brazilian reais.
