3 more states join FirstNet

Illinois, South Dakota and Wisconsin accepted the First Responder Network Authority and AT&T Inc.'s plan to deliver a wireless broadband network to the states' public safety communities.

AT&T, in a public-private partnership with the First Responder Network Authority, or FirstNet, will build, operate and maintain a highly secure wireless broadband communications network for the three states' public safety communities at no cost to the states, according to separate news releases. Wisconsin inked a 25-year deal with FirstNet.

FirstNet will transform the way the states' fire, police, emergency medical services and other public safety personnel communicate and share information. The network will help enhance coverage in rural areas, benefiting first responders and residents during natural disasters.

Iowa, Arkansas and Kentucky also recently decided to join FirstNet.
