At least 40 people dead in Afghan gold mine collapse

At least 40 miners were killed and 10 others injured after a gold mine collapsed in Afghanistan, CNN reported Jan. 6.

The victims were villagers from the Badakhshan province illegally mining for gold, according to a same-day report by Reuters.

A landslide caused the incident, which occurred during heavy snowfall, police spokesman Sanaullah Rohani told the news wire.
