Nuclear update: US output eases as DC Cook 2 shuts for refueling

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability slipped to 91.26% early March 1, down from 91.45% on Feb. 28 but still much higher than the 89.41% reported on the same day last year.

Cutting total output was the loss of American Electric Power Co. Inc.'s Donald C. Cook 2 plant in Michigan. The unit was offline early March 1 for what private sources say was for a refueling outage. The plant was operating at 50% power the day prior. In addition, Entergy Corp.'s River Bend 1 in Louisiana saw production decrease from 90% on Feb. 28 to 28% early March 1.

On the other hand, working to counter the curtailment and outage was Entergy's Indian Point 3 in New York, which was at 100% power early March 1, rising from 2% on Feb. 28. Also, Southern Co.'s Hatch 1 in Georgia was warming up at 5% early March 1 after being taken offline for undisclosed reasons on Feb. 28.
