Report: Indian regulator fines major telcos for low service quality

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, or TRAI, has fined major telecom operators for not meeting service quality norms in the March quarter, The Economic Times (India) reported, citing multiple sources.

A penalty worth 3.4 million Indian rupees has reportedly been slapped on Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. for not sufficiently adhering to standards of service at the point of interconnect congestion, accessibility of call centers and the percentage of calls answered by operators in a set time frame.

The Indian regulator also imposed fines of 1.1 million rupees on Bharti Airtel Ltd. for issues relating to metering and billing, call center accessibility and percentage of answered call in a definite time period, the sources said.

Idea Cellular Ltd. will need to pay 1.25 million rupees for the quarter under review for failure to meet call drops, requests for closure of services complied within seven days among others, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Group PLC unit Vodafone India has been fined around 0.4 million rupees for metering and billing issues and time taken to comply with termination or service closure requests, among other reasons.

Vodafone India and Idea Cellular recently completed their merger to form a new entity called Vodafone Idea Ltd.

The recent round of penalties come after TRAI took punitive action against the Indian carriers for not meeting service quality yardsticks in the December 2017 quarter.

As of Sept. 7, US$1 is equivalent to 71.97 Indian rupees.
