Potential data breach may affect Duke Energy Carolinas customers

Duke Energy Carolinas LLC on Dec. 5 announced that some of its 374,000 customers may be affected by a potential breach of personal information such as names, addresses and banking information. Customers who are possibly affected are those who paid a bill by check or cash at one of the 550 walk-in payment processing centers of the Duke Energy Corp. subsidiary from 2008 to 2017.

The company was notified Nov. 10 of the potential compromise of personal information involving TIO Networks Corp., the owner of the network used to process payments in the affected locations. TIO Networks was recently acquired by PayPal Holdings Inc.

"This TIO Networks issue has possibly and unfortunately affected some of our customers, and we are doing all we can to help," said Lesley Quick, Duke Energy's vice president of revenue services. "We have remained in daily contact with our vendor since they abruptly and unexpectedly disabled their network on Nov. 10 for suspected 'security vulnerabilities.'"

Customers may still pay in person at any Western Union branch, by calling 800-777-9898, or paying by check, debit or credit card online at www.duke-energy.com. More information is available at http://tionetworks.com.
