Syrah declares commercial production at Balama graphite project in Mozambique

Syrah Resources Ltd. declared commercial production Jan. 1 at the Balama graphite operation in Mozambique.

The company said Jan. 14 that it achieved an average graphite recovery of 70% in the fourth quarter of 2018 as compared to the average graphite recovery of 53% in the third quarter. Production of natural graphite reached 33,000 tonnes in the fourth quarter and 104,000 tonnes in the full year, in line with the company's 2018 guidance of between 101,000 tonnes and 106,000 tonnes.

The company recently achieved first production of unpurified spherical graphite at its Battery Anode Material facility in Louisiana, using natural graphite from Balama.

Syrah plans to implement further operational improvements as part of an ongoing ramp up at Balama to bring recoveries in line with its medium- and long-term targets, according to CEO Shaun Verner.
